That’s okay. Before we got his unsolicited demo in January 2007, neither had we. Luckily, he’d heard of us, and contacted us the way people in Cold Spring still do – he sent us a package, just to see what would happen. In all honesty, his odds were quite slim, but occasionally we’ll take down that “no solicitation” sign on our door. Eventually, we opened his package and gave his four songs a listen and decided to contact him – we happened upon Daniel while he was working at a friend’s bed and breakfast in Costa Rica. He’d been a bit of a drifter up until this point, studied photography in college, joined the Peace Corps in 2006, traveling to Cameroon for his service. What was supposed to be a two year commitment was cut short due to illness. So he came back to the states, lived in Minnesota for a while with his brother (who plays piano on several tracks), and began to focus on music.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe first thing you’ll notice about his debut, Stray Age is its simplicity. It’s a folk record, evoking certain feelings (as all good records should), but there’s a gentle approach to its sound and the way Moore’s voice phrases his words. Stray Age was recorded in Los Angeles in three different spurts, the first two sessions taking place in October and December of 2007, then the third in February of 2008. He even got some people you’ve heard of to help him out. Joe Chiccarelli (The Shins, U2, The White Stripes) took on co-production, recording and mixing duties. Justin Meldal-Johnsen (Beck, Tori Amos) played upright bass. Jesca Hoop lent her voice to “The Old Measure” and “Restoration Sketches”. And Petra Haden (Bill Frisell, Beck) adds violin to “It’s You”, “The Hour Of Sleep”, and “The Old Measure”.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThose reference points are really just that, though. Moore is most captivating as a singer, one who doesn’t seem concerned with usual folkie fodder. If you ask him what his music’s about – a legitimate question – he just politely shrugs his shoulders in a way that says, “that’s up to you to figure out”. But, the insights in Stray Age are not secrets and would never hope to be. That’s a good thing, as Moore’s much more of an optimist, hopefully anticipating the things that are just around the corner. “That’ll Be The Plan” strums along to a soft drumbeat, a traveling narrative centered around delicate mandolin solos. The one cover on the album, “Who Knows Where The Times Goes” has Moore slowly, softly singing Sandy Denny, coupling his gentle coaxing with a faint vibraphone.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eYet as simply as Daniel Martin Moore thinks of \u003cem\u003eStray Age\u003c\/em\u003e, it’s rich with understated complexities that take you to places that people like Nick Drake and Mojave 3\/Slowdive principal Neil Halstead have been cited as doing. There’s a soft swing in the vocals reminiscent of Chet Baker. But the one thing with Moore, that we like to think of as separating him from the pack, is he’s looking forward. He wants to go places, he wants you to come with him, and we’re finding him right in that moment.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eStray Age\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e is a work that welcomes a listener to know it. This is Daniel Martin Moore. He comes from a place both geographically and personally removed from any sense of the independent music scene. At the dawn of the decade, the scene’s members couldn’t have totaled north of 150. And the number of active, relevant local bands could’ve been counted on two chili-smeared hands (Cincinnati-style chili is an indigenous delicacy, in case you weren’t aware). But what Queen City punk lacked in quantity was, fortunately for us lucky-and-few participants, offset by the quality and pure passion of its acts — something that this compilation, the second installment of the We Were Living in Cincinnati series, makes clear. Loudly. The first volume, released on HoZac\/Shake It! in 2019, covered the scene from its protopunk stirrings circa 1975 up to the artistically transitional year of 1982. This chapter overlaps with the earlier one a bit, picking the ball back up again in ’82 and carrying it forward to the late 1980s.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs were other towns at the time, Cincinnati during this period was refining its underground flavors: postpunk, power pop, hardcore, garage revival, no wave, electronic, noise, neo-psychedelia, even a few full-circle nods back to the “classic” 1977 punk sound … it was all swirling together in the same steaming pot. But a shortage of steady local venues was problematic. The city’s large flagship club, Bogart’s, was closed for renovations from 1980 to 1982, and most other nighteries had fallen off. Things were centered around the stage-less side room of the Brew House in Walnut Hills, while occasionally there might be a WAIF benefit at the neighboring, listener-supported station’s studio in the decrepit Hotel Alms. Or maybe something downtown at C.A.G.E. (Cincinnati Artists Group Effort) gallery or, rarely, at the University of Cincinnati’s college of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) in Clifton. But that was it, really. The fall 1982 advent of the Jockey Club, just across the Ohio River in Newport, Kentucky, however, changed everything.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Reduced’s front man, Bill “Billy Blank” Leist, and a coterie that included his fellow WAIF DJ “Handsome” Clem Carpenter, had been attracted to the crumbling casino by a handful of adventurous one-off gigs there featuring Cointelpro, 11,000 Switches, BPA, and Alterior Motives. Leist talked its owner, ex-gangster “Shorty” Mincey, into letting him handle the booking, and the Jockey Club soon became one of the American underground’s leading venues. Pretty much all the bands heard on this compilation played its stage, as openers for touring acts and\/or on all-local bills.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe arrival of the Jockey Club was concurrent with the rise of hardcore, and its being part of the national D.I.Y. network was instrumental not only to the genre’s spread across the U.S., but to a reinvigoration of the local scene with youthful, newfound energy. The rising tide of “the J.C.” lifted many local boats, and the whole scene flourished, with gigs also happening back north of the river at joints like J.R.’s, Hot Shotz (formerly Shipley’s), the Plaza, Ripley’s, and C.J.’s Downunder. The death knell of the Jockey Club came when Bogart’s started presenting all ages shows, which meant that much of its student-heavy audience no longer had to travel to sketchy Newport for their rock action, and Shorty eventually sold the building.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBy that time, I had partnered with Leist in booking shows, building on what he’d done by funneling in the newer touring bands who’d been contacting via my fanzine, Suburban Muckraker, and my WAIF and WVXU radio shows. We moved on to the Top Hat, Murphy’s Pub, and, finally, Shorty’s Underground (named for the great man). Throughout, the scene remained defiantly vibrant, with new bands frequently forming to take the places of those who’d broken up. One of the area outfits that arose during this time was the Afghan Whigs, whose ascension would tilt the outside ears and eyes of A\u0026amp;R and music-media toward town, blowing the lid off the Cincinnati scene for all the world to see. Looking at things retroactively, with the rise of the Whigs, it feels like it becomes the next era, which is why I’ve chosen to make the period covered here parallel with the Jockey Club’s run as a punk venue: 1982-1988.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOne afternoon during those heady years, I was hanging out with Tim Schwallie of BPA and the Wolverton Brothers at scene hub the Highland Coffeehouse. Because music as uniquely cool and rocking as the Dents’doesn’t deserve to be hidden away and only enjoyed by some secret circle of mystic vinyl cabalists. The group were early American pioneers of what would retroactively be termed synth punk: a scorching fusion of futuristic synthesizers and grinding, garage-y guitars. Too tough for the synth pop lightweights and too contemporary for the brutes who dared not deviate from the guitars-only Ramones\/Pistols template.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIn 1988, I started gathering material for the compilation that would ultimately become 2019’s We Were Living in Cincinnati on HoZac\/Shake It. Keyboardist Doug Hallet made me a tape of some choice cuts, and I loved what I heard: squealing synths, growling vocals, chunky guitars, propulsive bass, and four-on-the-floor drums, the collective machine driving a clutch of great, super-catchy tunes. That tape got lost during the intervening decades, but Doug, vocalist Vivien Rusche (AKA Vivien Pinger), and I connected via Facebook when I resumed work on the comp and they sent some more tracks. The music sounded even better than I’d remembered it. In fact, “Sleeping Around,” a defiant, ahead-of-its time (or, perhaps, right-on-time) anthem of female sexual independence, in particular, proved to be a total revelation — an instant-but-overdue classic that had blown-away listeners asking one question, loudly: “When can we hear more Dents?”\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe answer: Right now. Right here. This cache of cool originals and sagely selected covers culled from two riotous gigs by the band offers ample evidence that the Dents were truly one of Midwestern American punk’s top undocumented acts. If they’d been in, say, San Francisco or L.A. circa ’79\/’80, instead of, yeah that’s right, Cincinnati, Ohio, it’s not hard to imagine them being snapped up by some seminal label to cut a solitary single whose sound would be emulated by young bands around the globe 40-plus years later.
