Shake It Update - 6/30/09
Hey all... thanks again for stopping by & check out what we have goin' on. Kinda
a short week 'cos of the holiday but there's a new Wilco, Bjork & Moby among
others.
We were saddened to learn of the passing of local music supporter, icon & friend
of the store, Michael Riley. Many may have known him from his years behind
the counter at Mole's back in the day or the WAIF show, The Danceable
Solution.
There was much more than just those few examples that he brought to
the local music scene.
There's most likely to be some type of rememberence later
this year. He was good, good man. He'll be missed by many friends & family.
King Records of Cincinnati Book Back In Stock!

We got more of Randy's new book. Its a great overview of the label via 120+ pages
of rare photos, short bios & interesting facts. Definitely a keeper. if ya don't know
the story.... Starting with a few songs and a dream in 1943, King Records
launched musical careers from a shabby brick factory on Brewster Avenue in
Cincinnati's Evanston neighborhood. Founder Sydney Nathan recorded country
singers Cowboy Copas, Hawkshaw Hawkins, Wayne Raney, and others and later
added black acts such as James Brown and the Famous Flames, Bull Moose
Jackson, Hank Ballard and the Midnighters, Lonnie Johnson, and Freddy King.
Meanwhile, King also explored polka, jazz, bluegrass, comedy, gospel, pop,
and instrumental music—anything that Nathan could sell. Although King's
Cincinnati factory closed in 1971, the company's diverse catalog of roots music
had already become a phenomenon. Its legacy lives on in hundreds of classic
recordings that are prized by collectors and musicians. Available online.
Afghan Whigs & Michael Jackson? Believe It! Kinda...
From Summerkiss:
By now, everyone knows that Michael Jackson has left the building. Regardless of what
you thought about his off-stage behavior, the man was a genius when writing, performing
and recording music.
In a 2004 interview , Greg Dulli had this to say about the gloved one:
LP: Spin and Rolling Stone are doing their 10 year Kurt Cobain remembrance issues.
How do you see the change in music culture since he died?
GD: Kurt Cobain was a friend of mine. We were on the same label [Sub Pop]. We toured
together. We stayed at each other's houses when we were on the van circuit. Watching
him write an album that went to number 1. An album that replaced Michael Jackson,
who was my musical hero for years..
LP: Really? The King of Pop?
GD: It's still not too late for him. I need to have a talk with him. When I was on Columbia,
I really tried to get Tommy Matolla to set up a meeting with me and Michael Jackson, so
I could straighten him out, but nothing happened.
As a virtual tipping of the bottle, you can download/stream The Afghan Whigs (featuring
Steve Myers ) using “Don't Stop Till You Get Enough” as an impromptu intro to “Blame
, Etc”. Recorded live at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta GA on February 26, 1999. I
was there, it was a great night.

Shake It Movie Night Returns To The Art Damage Lodge!
Monday, July 6th @ 8PM

The monks were 5 American GI's in cold war Germany who billed themselves as the
anti-Beatles; they were heavy on feedback, nihilism and electrical banjo. They had
strange haircuts, dressed in black, mocked the military and rocked harder than any of
their mid-sixties counterparts while managing to basically invent industrial, punk and
techno music. The genre-overlapping documentary film not only illustrates the pop
music phenomenon in its political, social and cultural historic contexts, but also
reveals the monks project as the first marriage between art and popular music
and this months before Andy Warhol and the Velvet Underground. The five protagonists
of the film came to cold war Germany in 1961 as soldiers and left the country in 1967
as avant-garde monks. For more than thirty years they were not able to talk about
their strange experience. In the film they recount for the first time their adventure.
Check out the trailer. Bring yer own whatever. 4120 Ham Ave in Northside. Check
out the Lodge's other goin-ons here.

New Releases for June 30th
In theory it should all be here by Tuesday but there's always the stragglers....
Bjork - Voltaic CD/CD+DVD/2xCD+2xDVD Nonesuch)
Voltaic is a remarkable, multi-media document of what happened after Volta was
completed -- a journey of a different sort as the ever-evolving singer assembled her
live band, made a collection of typically amazing videos and one-step-ahead remixes,
and toured the world. She recorded the Voltaic live CD in one take at Olympic Studio
in London . It's a stunning performance, featuring cutting-edge computer technology,
an old-school horn section and a female, flag-toting Icelandic choir. Deluxe version
includes the Voltiac live CD plus a DVD featuring 21 songs performed on the Volta
tour. Super deluxe 2xCD+2xDVD version features live recordings, remixes, videos
and much more.
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath 2xCD/2xLP (Sanctuary)
Digitally remastered and expanded edition includes a bonus disc containing nine
previously unreleased tracks.
Carcass - Wake Up And Smell The Carcass CD+DVD (Earache)
17 rarities from different eras of the band's career, including five extras from the
Swansong period, Radio One Session tracks and rare EP cuts. The accompanying
DVD contains two complete live sets taking in 17 classics from the period 1989-
1992. The DVD also comes with the band's five promo videos.
Cult Of Luna - Eternal Kingdom Redux CD+DVD (Earache)
Special Redux Edition includes a DVD featuring over and hour and a half of their
set in London in July 2008.
Matt Duke - Acoustic Kingdom Underground CDEP (Rykodisc)
Singer/songwriter Matt Duke released the full-length Kingdom Underground in Sept
2008. It contained a thoroughly engaging collection of intelligent, literate folk-based
pop songs that exude a unique playfulness while tackling some often-weighty topics.
Acoustic Kingdom Underground is the companion piece to Kingdom Underground,
and showcases more intimate performances of the album's standout tracks.
Levon Helm - Electric Dirt CD/LP (Vanguard)
Electric Dirt again finds Levon steeped in tradition in his connection to the land
and those who live by it, but this record goes deeper and wider, incorporating
gospel, blues and soul elements in a bracing collection of originals and
carefully chosen outside songs.
Jefferson Airplane - The Woodstock Experience 2xCD (Sony Legacy)
Lavishly packaged double disc set combines Jefferson Airplane's 1969 album
Volunteers with their entire Woodstock performance.
Jeremih - Jeremih CD (Def Jam)
Growing up on Chicago 's infamous Southside is the 21 year-old behind the
nationwide hit “Birthday Sex.” He is a singer, songwriter, producer, and
musician able to play multiple instruments including the saxophone, percussion,
keys and quads.
Janis Joplin - The Woodstock Experience 2xCD (Sony Legacy)
Lavishly packaged double disc set combines Joplin 's 1969 album I Got Dem
Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama with her complete Woodstock performance.

two historic sold out concerts for the first time since 1982. Available as two
separate double disc volumes, or as a limited edition collector's box set.
Killswitch Engage - Killswitch Engage CD/CD+DVD (Roadrunner)
Brand new album. Special edition CD+DVD contains four bonus tracks and a 30-minute
“behind the scenes” documentary and deluxe packaging.
David Lynch - David Lynch Presents Fox Bat Strategy: A Tribute To Dave
Jaurequi CDEP (David Lynch Music)
A long-time pet project of film director David Lynch. Fox Bat Strategy features
a cast of musicians who began collaborating with Lynch surrounding the
filming of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me . The same line-up of players
appeared on Fire Walk With Me 's two roadhouse cuts: ''The Pink Room'' and
''Blue Frank'' (as well as made cameos in the film itself). In 1994, these same
musicians, with an invitation from Lynch, re-entered the studio for experimental
collaboration. What emerged were these six tracks. For nearly fifteen years
these songs have remained unreleased and unheard, slow cooking in the
ether of time, all the while retaining a uniquely modern sensibility. This
release is a tribute to the album's late singer and guitarist Dave Jaurequi,
who passed away suddenly in 2006.
Albert King With Stevie Ray Vaughan - In Session CD (Stax)
Deluxe reissue of the famed in-concert 1983 jam session -- the only known recording
of Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan performing together.
Moby - Wait For Me CD/LP+MP3 (Mute)
Wait For Me is a radical departure from Moby's recent albums. Liberated from the
pressures of trying to please himself at the same time as the industry, Moby decided
to forego the expensive studios, state-of-the-art equipment, big name guest artists,
and phalanxes of graphic designers and image consultants that have characterized
some of his previous albums. "There's something so relaxing about doing
everything yourself, and not trying to second-guess the market," Moby says.
"It's nice to try to do things for the right reasons -- just make a record because
you want to make a record."
Obituary - Darkest Day CD (Candlelight)
New album from the veteran death metal band.
Santana - Santana: The Woodstock Experience 2xCD (Sony Legacy)
Lavishly packaged double disc set combines Santana's self-titled 1969 album with
his complete Woodstock performance.

Lavishly packaged double disc set combines Sly & The Family Stone's 1969 album
Stand! with their complete Woodstock performance.
Suicide Silence - No Time To Bleed CD/CD+DVD/LP (Century Media)
Sophomore album from the American deathcore metal band. Limited CD+DVD
“Maximum Bloodshed” box set edition includes a bonus track (“Misleading Milligrams”),
a bonus DVD featuring behind the scenes footage, a poster and collector cards.
Tanya Tucker - My Turn CD (Time/Life)
On her new album, Tanya Tucker takes classic country songs originally recorded
by male country
legends and turns the tables, giving classics by George Jones,
Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Conway Twitty and Eddy Arnold a powerful spin
from a woman's point of view. Guest artists include The Grascals, Jim Lauderdale
and bluegrass stars Rhonda and Darrin Vincent, with producer Anderson playing
guitar on every track.
Twisted Sister - Stay Hungry 2xCD (Atlantic)
Rhino's 25th Anniversary Edition combines the newly remastered, nine-track album
with an additional disc featuring 15 previously unreleased outtakes and demos from
the original sessions plus a new track.
Wilco - Wilco (The Album) CD/2xLP+CD (Nonesuch)
Wilco's seventh album combines the intimacy of its previous studio disc, Sky Blue
Sky, with the experimentation of A Ghost Is Born in a set that boasts strong melodies
and gorgeous, often unabashedly pop arrangements.
Willie Isz - Georgiavania CD/LP (Lex)
Acclaimed producer, lyricist and singer Jneiro Jarel teams up with Goodie Mob's
Khujo Goodie.
Johnny Winter - The Woodstock Experience 2xCD (Sony Legacy)
Lavishly packaged double disc set combines Winter's self-titled 1969 album with his
complete Woodstock performance.
Wu-Tang - Chamber Music CD (Koch)
Chamber Music 's throwback sound features a combination of live instrumentation and
new RZA beats shaped in a classic old-school soul type of vibe, reminiscent of the
group's classic 36 Chambers sound but with a completely updated, modern twist.
Includes newly recorded verses from every key member of the group, plus affiliates
Cappadonna, Killah Priest, Street Life and more.
DVDs:
Ted Nugent - Motor City Mayhem DVD/CD (Eaglerock)

touring career of Detroit's own Ted Nugent, as he performed his 6,000th show to a
raucous hometown crowd of 20,000 plus fans. Also available as a separate audio CD.
RiP! A Remix Manifesto - DVD (Disinformation)
In RiP! A Remix Manifesto , Web activist and filmmaker Brett Gaylor explores issues
of copyright in the information age, mashing up the media landscape of the 20th
century and shattering the wall between users and producers. The film's central
protagonist is mash-up phenom Girl Talk. But is Girl Talk a paragon of people power
or the Pied Piper of piracy? Creative Commons founder Lawrence Lessig, Brazil's
Minister Of Culture Gilberto Gil, and pop culture critic Cory Doctorow are also along
for the ride.
Vinyl:
Dead Weather - Hang You From The Heavens 7” (Third Man)
